Article summary

The article "The state of letters" by Catharine Savage Brosman was interesting for me because it raises important issues. The author is concerned with the declining status of literature, so in the article, she analyses this process's background and direct consequences. First, she refers to T.S. Eliot who claims that literature from the past is the basic to those of present. She author gives a lot of her personal examples while comparing literature habits of different generations. Catharine Savage Brosman claims that her students are no longer interested in reading challenging texts that acquire literary knowledge. She urges people to get acquainted with particular authors which would help not only to understand literature better, but it would help to understand life better. The author states that literature has a capacity to consolidate a common ground of understanding.

I have chosen this article because the author is speaking about the role of intertextuality not only in texts but also in real life. It is closely connected with the topic of my course paper.

After reading this article, one question came to my mind:
This article was written in 1996. Does the situation of the declining status of literature still exist?
